China: Vatican is welcomed, but no Taiwan, please.

China reportedly to tend to move close to Vatican, expressing its willingness to establish a formal diplomatic relationship with the Roman Catholics under the condition that the Vatican should cut off its tie with Taiwan.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said that “We are ready to improve relations with the Vatican.”

Why does the Chinese government feel so threatened by the Catholic Church? As a Catholic myself, there's no way that Chinese Catholics take any of the "state-appointed" clergy seriously. But I am curious as to what criteria a bishop must meet in China to be approved by the government.

However, it is ok for you to declaim you are a Taoist or a Buddist in the country.
